Nuevo Laredo Activates Civil Protection Council Amid Rising Rio Bravo Levels

Nuevo Laredo has activated its Municipal Civil Protection Council in response to an alert that the Rio Bravo will reach an estimated height of 6.5 meters. Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas is coordinating prevention and monitoring efforts in high-risk areas to ensure a swift and organized response to the rising water levels.

The increased flow is attributed to heavy rainfall in Coahuila and Nuevo León. The river, currently at 3.3 meters, is projected to peak around 6.80 meters on Sunday, July 19, between 5 and 6 p.m. Mayor Canturosas conducted a strategic site visit along the riverbanks with the Director of Civil Protection and Firefighters, Humberto Fernández Díez de Pinos.

"Our highest priority is and will always be the safety of each of you; therefore, we are on the ground, monitoring the evolution of this rise minute by minute to act with the firmness and promptness that Nuevo Laredo deserves," the mayor stated. To mitigate risks, recreational areas at the Temporary Vehicle Internment Center (CITEV) have been closed and cordoned off due to water ingress, with pedestrian access strictly prohibited.

Additionally, a preventive traffic operation will be implemented, including the closure of Avenida 15 de Junio and its connection to Boulevard Colosio during the afternoon and evening. This measure aims to prevent motorists from traveling through low-lying areas that could flood. Civil Protection brigades have visited vulnerable neighborhoods like El Remolino and Claudette to alert residents and offer municipal shelters if evacuations become necessary.
