Nvidia Donates $10 Million to Nepal Flood Recovery, One of the Country’s Biggest Corporate Contributions

More than 50 Nepali employees at Nvidia pushed their employer to support Nepal after devastating floods and landslides. The result was a $10 million donation from the US technology company and its co-founder and chief executive, Jensen Huang.

The money was deposited into the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund through Himalayan Bank, according to the bank’s chief executive, Ashok Rana. The contribution is the largest financial assistance Nepal has received from a technology company since the Bhotekoshi River flood on August 26, and one of the biggest corporate donations to the country’s recovery effort.

Ashok Pandey led the initiative with Aarti Neupane and other Nepali colleagues, social activist and entrepreneur Hikmat Thapa said. Thapa helped coordinate the effort with the government. He said the employees took the initiative themselves and advanced the rescue and relief effort for flood victims.

Nvidia sought assurances that the funds would be used properly. Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle helped provide those assurances and coordinate the donation. In a video posted on X, Wagle thanked Huang for contributing to the rescue, relief and rehabilitation of flood victims and said he hoped the gift would encourage other individuals and organisations to help.

The donation also highlights the scale of Nvidia’s transformation. Founded in California in 1993 as a maker of graphics processors for personal computers and video games, the company now supplies the GPUs used to train and run artificial intelligence systems at companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta. Its market capitalisation has risen above $5.5 trillion, and it employs more than 40,000 people worldwide, including more than 50 Nepalis.
