Nvidia pauses AI cloud financing program amid management interference and antitrust concerns

Global AI chip leader Nvidia has temporarily suspended certain aspects of its new financial support program, designed to aid partners in securing funding by sharing profits. The "AI Compute Partnership" program, launched just two months ago in July, aimed to assist smaller cloud companies that require significant initial capital investment.

Under the program's original structure, if a cloud company failed to secure enough customers, Nvidia would lease its excess graphics processing unit (GPU) capacity. In return, Nvidia would receive 50% of any additional revenue generated above the basic rental rate. This win-win approach, however, quickly encountered difficulties.

Reports indicate that Nvidia's partners pushed back against what they perceived as excessive management interference. Nvidia allegedly dictated that chips should only be leased to customers it approved and demanded that capacity be distributed among multiple smaller businesses rather than allocated to a few large clients. These demands fueled resentment among partners.

Furthermore, internal concerns were raised within Nvidia about the current operational model potentially violating antitrust regulations. These worries about regulatory scrutiny are cited as a reason for suspending parts of the program. While Nvidia stated the business model remains active and is evolving due to high demand, experts anticipate the company will likely revise the program or integrate it into other ventures to address partner complaints and regulatory risks.
