NWA announces traffic changes on Marcus Garvey Drive and East Avenue from September 7

Traffic movement from Marcus Garvey Drive onto East Avenue in St Andrew will change from Monday, September 7, as Jamaica’s National Works Agency moves to ease morning congestion.

The plan will create a dedicated left lane along Marcus Garvey Drive and strictly enforce no-stopping and no-parking rules along lower East Avenue. U-turns at the intersection will also be prohibited.

Stephen Shaw, the NWA’s manager of communication and customer service, said the measures aim to reduce peak-hour delays on Marcus Garvey Drive. Those delays affect vehicle access from several locations, including the Portmore Toll Road.

Traffic studies show that more than 13,000 vehicles use the intersection each day, including over 1,400 trucks during the busiest morning hour. The agency said at least two through lanes are needed to move traffic effectively through the intersection.

The changes are intended to increase through-traffic capacity while reducing delays and bottlenecks along East Avenue caused by illegal manoeuvres. The NWA and police will monitor the measures and adjust them if necessary.
