NYPD Officer Dies in Dominican Republic After Cosmetic Surgery

A 31-year-old NYPD officer of Dominican origin, Rebecca DePaula, died early Sunday in a clinic in the National District after undergoing cosmetic surgery to remove breast implants. Her family reported the death, stating that she experienced health complications following the procedure. They were informed by doctors that she suffered from severe diarrhea due to a supposed bacterial infection.

DePaula's relatives have requested authorities investigate the circumstances of her passing to determine if there was any medical negligence or malpractice. Her remains were at the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (Inacif) before being transferred to the United States.

The officer's death prompted reactions from her colleagues in New York. The New York Dominican Officers Organization (NYDO) issued a statement on Instagram expressing deep sorrow and requesting prayers for her family, highlighting her dedication to service. DePaula was also a Christian pastor alongside her husband and was involved in community work. She is survived by three minor children.

Authorities have not yet officially released the cause of death or the findings of their investigation into the case.
