OAB Paraná head: Gilmar Mendes's remarks highlight need for STF code of conduct

Luiz Fernando Pereira, president of the Paraná chapter of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), has sharply criticized Supreme Court Justice Gilmar Mendes following an interview on TV Cultura's Roda Viva program.

Pereira stated that Mendes's remarks were "very bad for the Judiciary" and underscored the "urgent need for a code of conduct for the Supreme Court." He argued that the interview exposed how such ethical guidelines are necessary for the nation's highest court.

During the interview, Justice Mendes criticized Justice André Mendonça, the rapporteur for the Banco Master case. Mendes called Mendonça's meeting with defense lawyers for banker Daniel Vorcaro to discuss the banker's plea deal a "gross error." Mendes also commented on the Electoral Justice system and succession issues in Rio de Janeiro, which are currently under review by the Supreme Court.

Additionally, Mendes reportedly expressed skepticism about a code of conduct for the STF proposed by the court's president, Edson Fachin. Pereira's critique suggests that Mendes's public statements, particularly his criticisms of fellow justices and the electoral system, have created controversy and fueled calls for greater judicial accountability and clearer ethical standards within the STF.
