Oaxacan journalist shot dead; one suspect arrested

Oaxacan journalist Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar was fatally shot three times, with bullets hitting his neck and head, according to Oaxaca's Attorney General Bernardo Rodríguez Alamilla. The attack occurred around 10:50 a.m. in front of Leyva's home in the La Esmeralda neighborhood of San Pablo Etla.

Authorities believe at least two assailants on a motorcycle were involved in the shooting, with one individual firing the weapon. One person has been detained, and investigators are working to determine their connection to the crime. The firearm used was reportedly a .22 caliber weapon.

Leyva was known for his column "El Zumbido del Moscardón" (The Bumblebee's Buzz), where he frequently criticized the government of Governor Salomón Jara Cruz and members of his cabinet. His reporting also included revelations of alleged corruption within the current Oaxaca administration. Leyva previously served as director of the Oaxacan Corporation of Radio and Television (CorTV) and was an active member of the Association of Journalists of Oaxaca (APO).

Rodríguez Alamilla stated that Leyva's journalistic activities will be one of the lines of investigation into his murder. However, he emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and declined to confirm whether the motorcycle used in the attack had been recovered. He also clarified that no other individuals were injured during the assault.
