Obituary: Doctor Concerned for Cyclist Safety

Dr. Seppo Kullervo Olkkonen, a physician, passed away in Espoo on May 19, 2025, at the age of 77. Born in Perniö in 1947, Olkkonen came from a family of five children, with parents who were evacuees from Karelia. His early life involved moves within Finland, and he was described as a lively, proactive, and energetic child.

Olkkonen excelled in athletics during his youth, particularly in long-distance running and cross-country skiing. He was characterized by his warmth, affection, curiosity, and outgoing nature, easily getting along with others. After completing evening school in 1969, he pursued medical studies and began his career as a site doctor in Iran, later returning to Finland due to conflict.

His most significant professional contribution was to safer traffic, with a focus on vulnerable road users. His doctoral research provided crucial evidence for the effectiveness of bicycle helmets, a cause he championed with his medical expertise and influence. He also served as a member of accident investigation committees, worked in emergency care at Töölö Hospital, and acted as a specialist in occupational safety. His research included a study comparing self-reported and actual helmet use among cyclists, often involving providing replacement helmets to participants.

Even in his later years, Olkkonen remained dedicated to an active lifestyle, participating in marathons, tennis, and golf. He also enjoyed extensive hiking in the French Écrins National Park and Norway's Hardangervidda plateau, as well as visiting the Arctic coast. A particularly memorable experience was a sailing trip with a friend through a significant storm. Matti Koivurova, a work and hobby colleague, remembered Olkkonen fondly.
