Obituary: Merikapteeni Olli Leino, A Life Dedicated to the Sea

The Finnish maritime community mourns the loss of Merikapteeni Olli Leino, who passed away on January 12, 2026, in Turku at the age of 79. Leino, born in Laitila, was a figure of considerable respect and experience within the seafaring world, leaving behind a legacy built on a life dedicated to the sea and its associated professions.

Leino's journey into maritime life began in 1968 when he joined an ocean-going vessel as a deckhand, fulfilling a youthful wanderlust with voyages to the Americas and Africa. This early experience solidified his ambition, leading him to the Rauma Maritime School, where he qualified as a first mate in 1974. His pursuit of excellence continued as he obtained his master mariner's certificate from Åbo Navigationsinstitut in 1976. His career was marked by significant milestones, including summer captaincy of steamships on Lake Saimaa starting in 1974 and a notable tenure aboard the Kristina Brahe, which opened doors to the rich cultural landscape along the Saimaa shores.

Beyond his sea-faring duties, Leino contributed to maritime education, serving as an instructor on the Suomen Joutsen and at Kakola prison, and as a chief inspector for maritime training in Helsinki. He later transitioned to a role as harbor master and pilot in Naantali in 1979, a position he held until his retirement. Leino was also remembered as an engaging conversationalist with a deep well of cultural and historical knowledge. His passion for sailing, particularly in the Turku archipelago, and his extensive travels further enriched his life. His passing, following a post-operative complication, marks the end of a full and impactful life, deeply felt by his family and friends.
