Ensuring lasting peace, democratic governance, and accountability in Bangladesh requires comprehensive institutional reforms, according to speakers at a recent roundtable discussion. The event, titled “For Sustained Peace and Democracy: Future of Reform in Bangladesh,” was organized by The Bangladesh Dialogue (TBD) in Dhaka.

Participants, including policymakers, journalists, diplomats, academics, and civil society representatives, urged for stronger democratic institutions. Key recommendations included reforming the police and judiciary, and implementing merit-based recruitment and transparency across all state institutions. They also highlighted the need to review politically motivated cases and prevent reform initiatives from being co-opted for political purposes.

The discussion underscored the vital role of a free, independent, and responsible media. Speakers also called for greater accountability from social media platforms to safeguard democratic discourse. Rebuilding public trust in state institutions, enhancing ethical standards in law enforcement, and strengthening parliamentary oversight through institutional reforms and a code of conduct for Members of Parliament were also emphasized.

Ultimately, participants concluded that a sustainable democratic transition hinges on continued dialogue among political parties, policymakers, civil society, the media, and citizens. The roundtable aimed to foster a collaborative approach to addressing the future of reform in Bangladesh.
