Islami Andolan Bangladesh (IAB) has called for the upcoming presidential election to adhere strictly to the July Charter, a consensus document among political parties. The party's Secretary General, Maulana Gazi Ataur Rahman, stated that proceeding with the election under existing constitutional arrangements before necessary amendments would contradict the core principles of the July Uprising.

The July Uprising took place with the expectation of dismantling the old order and running the country under a new arrangement. Some of those aspirations have been reflected in the July Charter.

Addressing a party conference in Patuakhali, Rahman emphasized that the July Uprising aimed to establish a new order, with some of these aspirations enshrined in the July Charter. He asserted that the presidential election must align with this charter, which all parties agreed upon for presidential appointments.

The IAB proposes that the constitution be amended at the beginning of the next parliamentary session. Following these amendments, the presidential election should be conducted within the revised constitutional framework. Rahman warned that electing a president under the old system, citing the unamended constitution as an excuse, would undermine the spirit of the July Uprising.

Therefore, the election of a new president must be held in accordance with the provisions of the charter on which all parties reached a consensus regarding the appointment of the president.

The conference also saw the appointment of new party officials for the Patuakhali district, including Kazi Golam Sarwar as president and RIM Ohiduzzaman as general secretary.

If the president is elected under the old arrangement on the excuse that the constitution has not been amended, it would go against the spirit of the July Uprising.
