The remains of acclaimed Bangladeshi writer and thinker Ahmed Sofa have been reburied in the intellectuals' section of the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard, approximately 25 years after his death. The ceremony took place around noon today, with poet and essayist Sakhawat Tipu confirming the completion of the reburial.

Ahmed Sofa passed away on July 28, 2001, and was initially laid to rest in the general section of the graveyard. Sakhawat Tipu explained that the graveyard has distinct sections, one reserved for intellectuals and freedom fighters who receive state honors, and another for general burials. He attributed Sofa's initial burial in the general section to "political reasons."

During the "Ahmed Sofa Memorial Lecture 2026" at the Bangla Academy, intellectual Salimullah Khan elaborated on these alleged political motivations. Khan stated that individuals appointed during a previous Awami League government remained in charge of the graveyard at the time of Sofa's death under a caretaker government. These individuals reportedly prevented Sofa's burial in the intellectuals' section and subjected those involved to harassment and bribery demands.

Following a political transition in 2024, Salimullah Khan and members of Ahmed Sofa's family actively worked to rectify the situation. Their efforts culminated in the exhumation and reburial of Sofa's remains in the section designated for intellectuals, honoring his legacy and contributions.
