OpenAI has introduced a new Apple Messages plug-in for ChatGPT, enabling users to interact with their messages directly from the chatbot on macOS. This integration allows for searching conversations, analyzing message history, drafting responses, and sending messages to contacts. The feature is available across various ChatGPT plans via the desktop app.

TechCrunch reported that the plug-in can also perform advanced tasks like deleting messages and suggesting follow-up replies based on previous exchanges. However, OpenAI has implemented an approval step for sending messages, requiring users to confirm both the content and recipients by default. The company cautions against enabling persistent approval, as it removes the final check before a message is sent under the user's identity.

The integration's access to personal message content raises significant privacy questions. In response, OpenAI stated that the plug-in operates locally on the user's machine and does not create a comprehensive index of their messages. This development marks a further step in transforming ChatGPT from a simple conversational assistant into a tool capable of performing actions across users' everyday applications.
