Bangladesh aims to transform Cox's Bazar into a premier international and regional tourism destination through a comprehensive master plan. Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury announced the initiative following a high-level meeting focused on the integrated development of the popular beach town.

We need to rethink the existing 50-metre and 500-metre restrictions on coastal development.

The government is re-evaluating existing coastal development restrictions, including the 50-meter and 500-meter setbacks. Chowdhury indicated a need to "rethink" these regulations, suggesting they should not impede investment while still ensuring environmental conservation. The minister advocated for vertical development, arguing it is essential for protecting industrial zones, water bodies, and agricultural land, drawing parallels with global cities that successfully utilize high-rise buildings.

Cox's Bazar is positioned as a critical growth engine for Bangladesh's economic ambitions. The finance minister stated that the tourism, trade, and service sectors in the region will play a significant role in elevating the national economy to a $1 trillion valuation by 2034. Ongoing mega-projects are intended to synchronize infrastructure development, creating a modern, digital tourism city.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed confirmed that the finance minister will lead the implementation of the master plan, which must be finalized by 2026. The plan's objectives include establishing Cox's Bazar as an international tourism and commercial hub, designating eco-friendly zones, reviewing restrictions on Marine Drive and coastal areas, and fostering an investment-friendly climate. The meeting involved ministers and secretaries from various relevant ministries, as well as officials from aviation and local government bodies.
