An endangered capped leaf monkey has died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross a road within Bangladesh's Lawachhara National Park. The monkey's body was discovered on the Bhanugachh-Srimangal road near the Magurchhara Gas Field area. Forest officials have begun a post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death. Local residents believe the accident occurred yesterday afternoon. Wildlife photographer Kajal Hazra reportedly found the monkey deceased beside the road around 5:00 PM and alerted the Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department. Forest staff recovered the carcass and transported it to the Jankichhara Wildlife Rescue Centre. The capped leaf monkey is listed as endangered on Bangladesh's Red List, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Range officer Sheikh Nazmul stated that the post-mortem report will confirm the exact cause of death, after which the carcass will be buried according to departmental procedures. Shamsul Haque, general secretary of the Lawachhara People's Forum, appealed for strict enforcement of speed limits on roads traversing the national park. He emphasized that speeding vehicles are repeatedly causing wildlife fatalities and called for the installation of speed breakers, warning signs, and regular monitoring to protect endangered animals.
