Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has underscored the necessity of merit-based promotions within the Bangladesh Army, asserting that personal biases and political affiliations must be disregarded in cultivating a modern and professional force. Speaking at the inauguration of the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2026 in Dhaka, Rahman stressed that "merit, professional competence, integrity, moral character, leadership qualities and discipline" should be the paramount considerations.

During his address, the prime minister honored the legacy of former president Ziaur Rahman, acknowledging his pivotal role in reorganizing and modernizing the army. Rahman also commemorated the sacrifices of martyrs from the 1971 Liberation War and recognized the contributions of war heroes and armed forces personnel, including those who lost their lives in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.

Rahman highlighted the army's multifaceted role, emphasizing its success not only in defending the nation's independence and sovereignty but also in maintaining law and order, responding effectively to natural disasters, and supporting civilian administration. He extended his gratitude to the Chief of Army Staff and all members of the Bangladesh Army for their dedicated service.

The prime minister was welcomed by the Chief of Army Staff and the Chief of General Staff upon his arrival. Senior military officials, including the Prime Minister's Defence Adviser, were also in attendance. The ceremony concluded with a photo session with army officers and Rahman signing the Army Visitors’ Book.

In order to build a modern and professional army, the highest importance should be given to merit, professional competence, integrity, moral character, leadership qualities and discipline in promotions, rising above personal liking and disliking or political considerations.
