The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has taken steps towards participating in the country's 23rd presidential election by collecting nomination papers from the Election Commission (EC). Senior party officials, including Vice Chairman Nurul Islam Moni and Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, obtained the necessary documents from the Returning Officer's office in Agargaon, Dhaka.

The election is set to take place on August 20, filling the vacancy left by Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation on July 24. Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has been serving as acting president in the interim. The EC is operating under constitutional and legal requirements to hold the election within 90 days of the vacancy.

Key dates for the electoral process have been announced. Candidates must submit their nomination papers between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on August 13. The scrutiny of these papers will commence on August 16 and continue until completion. Potential candidates have until 4:00 pm on August 18 to withdraw their nominations. The EC has received the electoral roll from the Parliament Secretariat, comprising 349 members, for the election.
