Oddone could shift the Frente Amplio's evolution, says political strategist

Political communication strategist Francisco Vernazza identified Economy Minister Gabriel Oddone as a pivotal figure who could shape the future direction of the Frente Amplio coalition. Vernazza, who has advised various political figures, believes Oddone possesses a rare combination of deep technical training and significant political skill, making him a potentially strong candidate to lead the party. "That is the differential of those who have made strong policies, he is there with some chance," Vernazza stated.

Despite the current government's low approval ratings in recent polls, Vernazza dismissed the idea that the Frente Amplio is without a chance in the 2029 elections. He suggested that success hinges on achieving favorable economic results and establishing the "orthodox line in the economic sense" as absolutely legitimate. Vernazza sees Oddone as the most interesting actor for this, representing "a maximization of technical training" coupled with "a great sense of politics."

Vernazza acknowledged that predicting Oddone's candidacy for president in 2029 is not a certainty, especially since Oddone himself has dismissed the possibility. However, he highlighted Oddone's "attractiveness" and his potential to "move the curve of the Frente Amplio's evolution." Such a shift, Vernazza explained, could signal a move beyond past glories towards a focus on long-term planning and fiscal responsibility, encapsulated by the idea of "not spending more than we have."

The strategist also commented on the government's "little theoretical capital," contrasting it with the Frente Amplio's historical reliance on a clear worldview. This worldview, which previously advocated for taxing businesses and increasing social spending, has been evolving since the fall of socialism in 1989. Vernazza noted the current contradictions within the party, where the Economy Ministry, under Oddone, emphasizes fiscal prudence, while parliamentarians propose increased social spending, reflecting the party's traditional base.
