Offensive Against Road Recklessness in Cartagena: DATT Impounds Over 180 Motorcycles for Invading Transcaribe's Exclusive Lane

Cartagena's traffic authorities have launched a significant offensive against reckless driving, focusing on the persistent problem of motorcyclists illegally using Transcaribe's dedicated bus lane. In a recent operation along the Pedro de Heredia avenue, the Department of Administrative Transit and Transport (DATT), along with the Interior Secretariat and Metropolitan Police, issued over 220 citations and impounded more than 180 motorcycles.

This crackdown addresses a recurring issue in the city. Throughout 2026, traffic authorities have already recorded over 5,000 citations for entering restricted areas or operating during prohibited hours. The unauthorized use of the bus-only lane significantly impacts the frequency and travel times for thousands of Transcaribe users and drastically increases the risk of accidents on one of the city's busiest thoroughfares.

José Ricaurte, director of DATT, stressed the danger posed by these violations. "Improper entry into the bus-only lane represents a risk not only to those who commit the infraction but also to drivers, motorcyclists, pedestrians, Transcaribe users, and other actors who converge daily on this road," he stated.

Traffic reports consistently identify motorcyclists as the primary offenders in these high-risk maneuvers. The DATT is urging citizens to demonstrate a genuine commitment to traffic regulations, reminding everyone that the exclusive lane is strictly intended for the operation of the system's buses.
