Officials Urge Immediate Evacuation as Wildfire Threatens West Kelowna Area

Central Okanagan Emergency Management (COEM) has issued an urgent plea for all residents within the Quilpituk Creek wildfire evacuation zone to leave immediately. The organization stressed that evacuation orders are not suggestions but critical life-safety measures, issued when there is a direct risk to life and well-being.

Evacuation Orders are issued when there is a risk to life and safety. They are based on current and anticipated conditions and are intended to ensure residents can leave safely while egress routes remain viable. Choosing to remain in an Evacuation Order area puts yourself, your family and first responders at risk.

COEM has become aware that some individuals have chosen to remain in the evacuation area. Officials warn that this decision puts not only the residents themselves but also their families and first responders in grave danger. While crews are making progress on the Quilpituk Creek fire, located north of West Kelowna and currently mapped at 1,139 hectares, conditions remain volatile. Forecasted winds could increase fire activity in the coming days, and residents should not assume they will have ample time to evacuate if the situation deteriorates rapidly.

Furthermore, residents who defy the evacuation order should not expect consistent access to emergency services, including paramedics, firefighters, and police. Deliveries of essential items like food and fuel are also prohibited within the evacuation order areas.
