Ogazi Claims Historic Commonwealth Gold, Aims to Be Greatest Ever

Samuel Ogazi has set his sights on becoming the greatest athlete in history after securing a historic gold medal in the men's 400m at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games. The 20-year-old Nigerian star, who is the world number one in the event, powered to victory with a time of 44.25 seconds.

This gold medal marks a significant achievement for Nigeria, being the country's first-ever in the men's 400m at this level. It surpasses the bronze medal won by Sunday Bada in 1994. Ogazi finished comfortably ahead of the competition, with defending champion Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago taking silver in 44.82 seconds, and South Africa's Zakithi Nene claiming bronze in 45.21 seconds.

Ogazi, who was an Olympic finalist as a teenager at Paris 2024 and is already the fourth-fastest man ever over the distance, handled the pressure of expectation with confidence. "I did not want to come out here and disappoint. I was confident, I came here prepared, I have trained for this and for conditions like this," he stated after his win.
