Ogun Assembly exonerates ex-Speaker of embezzlement allegation

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution exonerating former Speaker Olakunle Oluomo from embezzlement allegations that led to his removal from office in 2024. During Wednesday's plenary session, the Assembly also commuted Oluomo's impeachment to a resignation.

The resolution was adopted following the presentation of a report by the Committee of the Whole House, submitted by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs. Lateefat Ajayi. The report indicated that the embezzlement allegation was not included in the official notice of removal served to Oluomo. Furthermore, the committee found that the allegation could not be substantiated with the available evidence.

Citing Section 36 of the Nigerian Constitution, which pertains to fair hearing, the Assembly reviewed the evidence presented. It concluded that the embezzlement allegation would no longer be considered a reason for Oluomo's removal. The House also considered Oluomo's plea for exoneration or the presentation of concrete evidence supporting the claims.

In a move described as being in the interest of "camaraderie, unity and harmony among members," the Assembly decided to overturn the impeachment and reclassify it as a resignation. This resolution effectively clears the former Speaker of the specific embezzlement charges that were central to his removal.
