Ogun Confirms Full Recovery of Victims in Ijebu-Ode Gas Incident

Ogun State has officially confirmed the full recovery of all victims involved in the recent chemical inhalation incident that affected schools in Ijebu-Ode. The State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, announced that every person admitted to the State Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, and Ijebu-Ife has been discharged, having received medical attention and been certified fit. This reassuring news comes after concerns arose regarding methane emission exposure. Commissioner Coker emphasized that while methane is non-toxic, its ability to displace oxygen poses a risk, potentially causing symptoms ranging from fatigue to breathing difficulties in moderate concentrations. Thankfully, no severe cases were recorded. To bolster emergency preparedness, the state government is implementing enhanced measures, including deploying ambulance crews to all wards in Ijebu-Ode and establishing a robust medical response protocol for swift transfers to higher-level care facilities. Furthermore, toxicology tests are being conducted on some affected children to ascertain the extent of exposure. The government urges residents to remain calm and utilize the emergency response line for any suspicious occurrences, assuring them of the presence of environmental health officials, rapid response teams, and adequate medical supplies. Teachers and interested parents will also receive training as community first responders, strengthening the local capacity to manage such incidents.

There were persons admitted at the Ijebu-Ode State Hospital and others at Ijebu-Ife who were affected by the methane emission. Altogether, we had adults and children admitted, and I am glad to say that all have been discharged. They are hale and hearty.
