OIC to Launch Islamic Human Rights Observatory to Monitor Global Violations

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is set to launch the Islamic Human Rights Observatory, a new institutional mechanism dedicated to monitoring, documenting, and analyzing human rights violations impacting Muslim communities and minorities worldwide. Dr. Hadi Al-Yami, Executive Director of the OIC's Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission, revealed the plans, emphasizing the observatory's role in providing reliable information and real-time analysis.

The commission is expanding its cooperation with international justice and accountability mechanisms.

The observatory aims to bolster early warning systems and assist member states in developing evidence-based legal and policy responses. Key focus areas include combating Islamophobia, hate speech, religious discrimination, media disinformation, and addressing challenges within conflict zones. The commission is collaborating with the OIC's special envoy on Islamophobia and UN mechanisms to craft a comprehensive strategy tackling the root causes of these issues and supporting legislation against incitement to hatred.

The commission's engagement on the Palestinian issue extends beyond statements of condemnation to include legal analysis, documentation of alleged crimes, protection of civilians, ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid, and support for Palestinian rights during recovery and reconstruction efforts.

Al-Yami also highlighted the commission's strengthened engagement with international justice and accountability bodies, including the International Criminal Court and UN mechanisms. This engagement focuses on improving documentation of violations in the Palestinian territories, advancing accountability, and fighting impunity. The commission's work extends beyond condemnations to include legal analysis, documenting alleged crimes, protecting civilians, ensuring humanitarian aid delivery, and supporting Palestinian rights during reconstruction efforts.

Saudi Arabia's support has strengthened the commission's work, enhanced its institutional stability, and expanded its international presence.

Furthermore, the commission has adopted a new strategic framework for 2026-2030, designed to enhance institutional effectiveness and shift its operations towards a systematic, results-based approach. This framework places a strong emphasis on promoting the rights of families, women, children, older persons, and people with disabilities, aligning with Islamic values and member states' international obligations. Saudi Arabia's substantial support has been instrumental in bolstering the commission's work and expanding its international presence.

The observatory will provide reliable information and real-time analysis, support early warning systems, and help member states formulate evidence-based legal and policy responses, particularly in addressing Islamophobia, hate speech, religious discrimination, media disinformation, and challenges arising in conflict zones.
