Oil Supply Halt from Kazakhstan: Employment Guarantee for Schwedt Refinery Extended

Germany's federal government is taking decisive action to secure the future of the vital PCK refinery in Schwedt, extending an employment guarantee until the end of 2026. This move comes as a critical stabilization measure amidst the ongoing uncertainty caused by Russia's cessation of Kazakh oil imports through the Druzhba pipeline.

Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Katherina Reiche, emphasized that the extension is a crucial signal to the refinery's more than 1,000 employees, offering much-needed reliability in a volatile situation. The guarantee ensures that jobs are protected, fostering confidence in the site's long-term viability. Reiche, alongside Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke, visited the refinery to underscore their commitment to supporting its operations.

To further stabilize the site and create reliable prospects for the employees, the existing regulations for the employment security of the PCK refinery are extended by six months until the end of 2026.

The halt in oil flow from Kazakhstan via the Druzhba pipeline, initiated on May 1st, significantly impacts the refinery, which is a key supplier of fuel for the capital region. By extending the employment guarantee, the German government aims to mitigate the economic fallout and maintain essential fuel supplies, demonstrating its commitment to both its workforce and regional energy security.
