Okocha opens up on failed Bayern move

Nigerian football icon Austin 'Jay-Jay' Okocha has disclosed that a move to German giants Bayern Munich in 1991 fell through due to age restrictions. Okocha, then 17, had impressed the club during a tournament in Switzerland, leading to an offer.

I got an offer from Bayern Munich. I went with their youth team to a tournament in Switzerland, and after that, they wanted to sign me.

However, German regulations stipulated that professional contracts could only be offered to players aged 18 and above. As Okocha's 18th birthday was in August, Bayern could not formalize the offer with a professional contract at that time. Okocha expressed his hesitation to rely on a verbal agreement, fearing potential injury without a written contract.

Bayern made me an offer, but it was only verbal because they said, ‘We can’t give you a professional contract until you turn 18.’

Following this, Okocha signed with third-tier club Borussia Neunkirchen. He later moved to Eintracht Frankfurt during the winter transfer window, where he established himself in the Bundesliga, scoring 18 goals in 90 appearances. His successful spell in Germany paved the way for a move to Fenerbahce in 1996.

I asked them, ‘Can you put it in writing on paper? Because I can’t come all the way from Nigeria to rely on a verbal contract. What if I get injured and you tell me to go home? I’ll have nothing?’

Reflecting on the missed opportunity, Okocha acknowledged the stature of Bayern Munich at the time and expressed his willingness to take the risk of waiting for the club. He was prepared to train with the professionals and play with the reserve team, underscoring his ambition even at a young age.
