Old photo of Taipei mayor sleeping while holding son draws criticism as ‘exploitation’

Political commentator Grace Wu Jingyi has criticized Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an over an old photo showing him wearing glasses and holding his sleeping son.

The post came amid controversy over Chiang’s eldest son, Chiang Te-li, receiving eligibility for a Taipei-funded student exchange in the United States, as well as an earlier dispute involving a scouting examination.

Wu said the child was innocent and questioned how Chiang could use his son for political image-making. She wrote, “Privilege is the father’s problem. He made his son someone who enjoys privilege and then appears in the newspapers.”

The photo drew a large number of online comments. Some users questioned whether it had been staged, while others argued that politicians should not use their children to package their own public image.
