Oman forum seeks to strengthen environmental protection laws

Officials and activists gathered in Oman's Dhofar Governorate for a forum focused on enhancing environmental protection. Organized by the Environment Authority, the event aimed to update existing legislation and procedures, particularly concerning violations that impact the region's biodiversity.

The forum, held under the patronage of Sheikh Dr. Said bin Humaid Al Harthy, Wali of Salalah, brought together government representatives, specialists, stakeholders, and conservation activists. Discussions included working papers on criminal liability for crimes against wildlife and vegetation, as well as a review of the Pastures and Livestock Management Law to identify weaknesses contributing to issues like tree bark stripping.

Initiatives for sustainable development were also on the agenda, with a review of the "Green Pastures Resting" project and its implementation challenges. A panel discussion featuring experts and officials explored practical applications of environmental protection laws, the difficulties faced by enforcement officers, and proposals for improved collaboration in addressing wildlife violations.

The forum concluded with a set of recommendations emphasizing the need for consolidated partnerships among law enforcement entities. Key suggestions included updating legislative and procedural frameworks, adopting digital evidence and modern technologies, and initiating public awareness campaigns to highlight the risks of harmful environmental practices and associated penalties.
