Oman Intensifies Response to Oil Pollution From Grounded Ship

Oman is intensifying its response to an oil spill caused by a grounded ship off the coast of the Hallaniyat Islands, with national emergency teams coordinating efforts to contain and monitor the pollution. The primary focus is on cleanup operations in Ras Madrakah, where specialized teams and equipment are being utilized based on technical assessments.

Environmental monitoring and preparedness are key components of the ongoing response. Authorities are maintaining a heightened state of readiness on Masirah Island, a critical area for monitoring. So far, monitoring confirms that the oil slick has not reached the island's shores. Teams are diligently tracking the oil's movement and updating projected paths using available data and predictive models to anticipate its spread.

Waste management is also a significant aspect of the operation. Material collected from beach-cleaning efforts is being transported to designated disposal facilities. Bee’ah, a waste management company, has identified specific landfill sites in Duqm and a transfer point on Masirah Island for the appropriate handling and assessment of the collected waste.

Water resources are also being secured. Daily water quality tests in Ras Madrakah and Duqm have shown samples to be safe and compliant with standards. On Masirah Island, contingency plans are in place, including preparing coastal wells as an alternative water source should the desalination plant's intake be compromised. These comprehensive measures aim to limit the environmental impact and protect marine and coastal ecosystems.
