Oman, Iran discuss framework for resumption of safe navigation through Strait of Hormuz

Oman and Iran have engaged in constructive consultations aimed at restoring safe navigation through the critical Strait of Hormuz. The discussions, held during a working visit by Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi to Tehran, focused on the shared importance both nations place on secure passage while preserving their sovereignty.

A joint statement outlined a phased framework designed to provide a practical basis for moving forward, acknowledging the current situation in the strait resulting from recent conflicts. Key proposals include the establishment of a temporary joint navigational corridor and an agreement to implement a collaborative project for clearing mines within the Strait of Hormuz.

Further technical negotiations are planned to establish a permanent navigational corridor, define future administration of the strait, and create mechanisms for information sharing, traffic management, and navigational and security services. Both sides also stressed the importance of convening joint discussions with other regional states bordering the Gulf waters, underscoring the need to uphold international law and respect the sovereign rights of coastal states.
