Omani Down Syndrome Association launches first nationwide awareness caravan

The Omani Down Syndrome Association has initiated a significant nationwide awareness caravan, embarking on a journey from Al Seeb in Muscat Governorate to Dhofar, aiming to foster greater understanding and inclusion for individuals with Down syndrome across Oman.

This pioneering caravan, which commenced on July 31 and concludes on August 7, is traveling through key Omani cities including Nizwa, before reaching its final destination in Salalah. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Jabri, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the association, highlighted that the initiative underscores the organization's dedication to broadening public awareness regarding the rights and capabilities of people with Down syndrome throughout all governorates.

The caravan aims to strengthen community partnerships and spread awareness about issues affecting people with Down syndrome while highlighting the talents and capabilities of our children and promoting a culture of inclusion and social acceptance.

Al Jabri explained that the caravan's objectives extend beyond mere awareness. It aims to forge stronger community partnerships, disseminate information about the challenges and triumphs of individuals with Down syndrome, and showcase their diverse talents and abilities. A crucial aspect of the campaign is to challenge and correct common misconceptions, introduce the association's mission and services, and inspire increased community involvement and support.

Furthermore, the awareness campaign is designed to be a catalyst for attracting volunteers, supporters, and sponsors, thereby bolstering the association's capacity to implement future programs. The caravan itself comprises 12 buses carrying 200 participants and 24 volunteer supervisors, equipped with safety measures. Upon arrival in Dhofar, participants will engage in educational and recreational activities, including visits to cultural landmarks, promoting learning and community engagement.

The initiative also seeks to correct common misconceptions about Down syndrome, introduce the association’s mission, services, and programmes for individuals with Down syndrome and their families, and encourage greater community involvement.
