Ombudsman Ethics Council Completes Probe into Former Chairman Hery Susanto

The Ombudsman Ethics Council has concluded its investigation into alleged ethical misconduct by its former chairman, Hery Susanto. Susanto is currently a suspect in a bribery case concerning the alleged sale of Ombudsman investigation reports to companies.

Jimly Asshiddiqie, a member of the Ethics Council, stated that the council has gathered statements from internal Ombudsman staff, associations of ombudsman assistants, and former Ombudsman members over the past three weeks. The council also met with the Attorney General and the Junior Attorney General for Special Crimes to align their understanding of the case.

Asshiddiqie clarified that the meeting with the prosecutor's office was not to interfere with the legal assessment but to inquire about the timeline of Hery's legal process. He expressed concern that a lengthy legal battle could take years, potentially damaging public confidence in the institution. The council is particularly considering Hery's potential dismissal, as the Ombudsman Law allows for the removal of leaders or members who are unable to perform their duties for more than three months. The prosecutor's office indicated that Hery's legal proceedings might exceed this period.

The Ethics Council also reviewed similar cases and received informal input from members of Commission II of the House of Representatives. They summoned the selection committee for Ombudsman candidates and previous Ombudsman leaders to investigate Hery Susanto's selection process and the recommendations made at the time. Although the investigation is complete, the council is allowing Hery or his legal team to submit a written defense by Friday, May 29, 2026, after he was unable to attend a prior summons due to the Attorney General's office not permitting it.
