'On the Road' to Represent Mexico at Oscars, 'Flies' at Goya Awards

Mexico has selected David Pablos's 'En el camino' (On the Road) to compete for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming 99th Academy Awards. The film, which premiered at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival, has already received accolades, including the Horizontes Award and the Queer Lion Award. It is also a leading contender in Mexico's Ariel Awards.

Pablos, known for his work on 'El baile de los 41,' focuses his lens on diverse stories, particularly those of the LGBTQ+ community. 'En el camino' delves into the life of a young homosexual man navigating the challenging routes along the Mexican border. The film is the culmination of a decade of work, drawing from research and interviews with truck drivers facing a heteronormative society where homosexuality is still judged.

Meanwhile, Fernando Eimbcke's 'Moscas' (Flies) has been chosen to represent Mexico at the 2027 Goya Awards, competing for Best Ibero-American Film. The film made its international debut at the Berlinale 2026, where it competed for the Golden Bear and won the Ecumenical Jury Prize in the Panorama section.

Eimbcke, returning to his distinctive black-and-white style seen in 'Temporada de patos,' captures the everyday realities of illness and grief through the eyes of a young boy named Cristian. The film was shot in Mexico City and explores these profound themes with a sensitive touch, offering a unique perspective on loss and recovery.
