Ondo Governor Calls for More Women in Political Positions

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has called for greater inclusion of women in political and elective positions across Nigeria, emphasizing their vital role in national development. Speaking at the launch of the '774 Explode Project' in Akure, Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy Dr. Olayide Adelami, stressed that women are fundamental to societal progress.

He elaborated on women's multifaceted contributions, including nurturing families, preserving values, sustaining economies, resolving conflicts, and shaping future generations. Aiyedatiwa also acknowledged women's increasing impact on public administration, entrepreneurship, technology, education, agriculture, and governance, asserting that leadership is based on competence, character, and vision, not gender.

We must be proud of the appreciable progress we have recorded in this direction, yet we honestly admit that significant gaps still exist. We, therefore, like to advocate for intentional and greater inclusion of women in elective offices, leadership positions and strategic decision making structures.

While recognizing the progress made in women's participation, Aiyedatiwa admitted that significant gaps persist. He advocated for deliberate and intentional efforts to increase women's representation in leadership roles and strategic decision-making structures. "Not any more should cultural stereotypes, economic barriers and systemic limitations be allowed to impede the realisation of their full potential," he urged, calling for well-orchestrated actions rather than mere sympathy.

The governor commended the National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for initiating the '774 Explode Project' in Ondo State. He described the initiative as a powerful declaration that unlocking women's potential is crucial for Nigeria's future. Aiyedatiwa referenced historical examples of great societies that achieved success by harnessing the talents of both men and women. Echoing this sentiment, APC National Women Leader Dr. Mary Idele stated that the future of Nigerian democracy depends on the inclusion of young people, particularly young women, whose talents are essential and should not be sidelined.
