Ondo Medical University Academic Staff Strike Indefinitely

Academic activities at the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), have ground to a halt as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike.

The union's decision, reached at an emergency congress meeting on Thursday, August 27, follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum. ASUU-UNIMED cited the Ondo State Government and university administration's failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and to pay accrued arrears dating back to January 1, 2026, as the primary reasons for the industrial action.

In a statement signed by the branch Chairperson, Comrade Abraham Oladebeye, and Secretary, Comrade Adeniran O. Akinola, the union expressed its displeasure. "Congress frowned at the outright failure of Ondo State Government to implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU Agreement and the accrued arrears from 1st January, 2026 in the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, despite the 14-day ultimatum issued by the Union," the statement read.

Consequently, ASUU-UNIMED directed all its members to withdraw from statutory academic functions and services, effective immediately. The strike encompasses lectures, assessments, examinations, seminars, and meetings at all levels. Student research supervision, industrial training, and fieldwork will also be suspended until the union's demands are fully met.

The union has mandated its Branch Executive Council (BEC) to engage the public and media to explain their grievances and to monitor compliance with the strike directive. This action is expected to significantly disrupt academic operations at the state-owned medical university, adding to the ongoing national pressure on universities regarding the implementation of FG-ASUU agreements.

Congress resolved that this total, comprehensive and indefinite strike would persist and subsist, pending the full implementation of the Agreement with the accrued arrears from 1st January, 2026 in the University, and subsequent directive from NEC.
