One dead, 12 injured in Russian attack on Kyiv

One woman died and at least 12 people were injured in a Russian attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, overnight Wednesday, according to the city's military administration.

Ukraine's air force issued a warning about ballistic missiles following the strikes. An air alert was in place for about an hour and 25 minutes before being lifted. Earlier in the night, Kyiv Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported that several people might be trapped under rubble after Russian airstrikes hit a residential building.

Three of the injured have been hospitalized, with one in serious condition. This attack comes amid an escalation of long-range strikes by both sides in recent weeks. Russia reportedly more than doubled its missile usage in July.

Both nations have been regularly attacking each other. Ukraine has intensified its strikes on civilian infrastructure, including oil and gas facilities, and logistical targets within Russia. Last Saturday, Russian attacks on Kyiv and its suburbs resulted in ten deaths and 30 injuries. Meanwhile, Ukrainian drones sank a large Russian container ship in the Black Sea.

Earlier this week, five people were killed and ten injured in attacks on warehouses belonging to Russian e-commerce giant Wildberries in the Moscow region. Ukraine has also condemned a video showing a man being chased by a drone in Kherson, calling it a deliberate targeting of civilians. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has expressed concern over the rising civilian casualties, which have reached their highest level since Russia's invasion in February 2022.
