One dead, 4 injured in electric tricycle rollover in eastern Cuba

A tragic accident in Cuba's eastern Guantánamo province resulted in one fatality and four injuries when an electric tricycle overturned. The incident occurred on Loma de Boquerón in the Yateras municipality after the driver lost control of the vehicle, according to state media reports.

Among the injured is a minor who is receiving medical attention at the Guantánamo Pediatric Hospital. This accident highlights the growing reliance on electric tricycles and other electric vehicles in Cuba, which have become more prevalent due to persistent fuel shortages across the island.

Data from the National Road Safety Commission indicates a concerning trend in traffic accidents. Between January and March 2026, Cuba recorded 1,234 accidents, leading to 153 deaths and 1,154 injuries. The commission noted that motorcycles, mopeds, and pedestrians were involved in 74% of these incidents.

Human error, including inattention, failure to yield the right of way, and speeding, were identified as primary causes for these accidents. In 2025, Cuba experienced 7,538 traffic accidents, resulting in 750 deaths and 6,718 injuries, with the human factor being a significant contributor in the majority of cases.
