One in four Tel Aviv-Jaffa families headed by a single parent, report finds

A new report reveals that one in four families in Tel Aviv-Jaffa is led by a single parent, a rate considerably higher than Israel's national average of 15%. The city is home to 13,412 such families, with women heading 96% of them. This figure represents a four-percentage-point increase since 2015.

The data, compiled by the Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality's Center for Economic and Social Research, also breaks down the distribution of single-parent families across different city areas. Approximately 7,220 families reside in northern and central Tel Aviv, while Jaffa and southern Tel Aviv host 2,290, and eastern Tel Aviv has 2,540.

The report further examined various demographic segments within Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Women constitute half of the city's population, with a higher proportion among residents aged 65 and older. The city's fertility rate stands at 1.8 births per woman, below the national average of 2.9. Notably, 44% of women in Tel Aviv-Jaffa have completed at least 16 years of education, compared to 29% nationwide, and 69% participate in the workforce.

Regarding the Arab population, 26,970 Arab residents live in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, with the majority, 21,450, residing in Jaffa, where they form 38% of the local population. Jaffa's demographic makeup is 54% Jewish, 31% Muslim, and 6% Arab Christian. The report also touches upon educational attainment, welfare service eligibility, and workforce participation rates among different groups within the city.
