One Indonesian Among Vessel Crew Killed in Houthi Attack, Report Says

An Indonesian national was reportedly among three crew members killed when a merchant vessel was attacked in the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait. The attack, which occurred on August 11, 2026, is suspected to have been carried out by the Houthi group in Yemen, according to Anadolu news agency, citing Al-Jumhuriya TV.

Initial reports indicate that two Pakistani citizens also died in the assault. The identity of the attacked vessel and its owner have not been disclosed, and there has been no official statement from the Houthis regarding the incident. The Bab Al-Mandeb Strait is a crucial maritime gateway connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

This attack follows a separate Houthi assault on a port near the Bab Al-Mandeb and nearby residential areas on Sunday. That incident, reported by Yemeni sources citing TRT World, resulted in the deaths of at least seven civilians and military personnel, with approximately 35 others wounded.

The region is experiencing a surge in violence, with fighting intensifying across multiple fronts in Yemen since last month. A relative lull in the years-long conflict between the Houthis and the Saudi-led government, which began in April 2022, was broken on July 13 following a Saudi airstrike on Sanaa airport. Since then, retaliatory attacks have claimed dozens of lives on both sides. UN envoy Hans Grundberg warned on Friday that Yemen faces a greater risk of large-scale conflict than at any point since the UN-brokered truce in April 2022.
