One Mistake on Vacation Can Lead to Bed Bugs: Here's How to Avoid Them

Bed bugs, unwelcome hitchhikers from hotels and accommodations, pose a significant threat of infestation, with just one fertilized female capable of spreading them into a home. The German Federal Environment Agency warns that these tiny creatures, which feed on blood, are active year-round in human-inhabited spaces.

Adult bed bugs measure between 4 to 8.5 millimeters and can live for about six months, during which a female can lay up to 150 eggs. They commonly conceal themselves in mattresses, bedding, and furniture, but can also be found behind picture frames, electrical switches, and baseboards. To minimize risk, travelers are advised against placing luggage directly on beds or sofas in hotel rooms and to thoroughly inspect their belongings before departing.

Signs of infestation include tiny black droppings, eggs, or shed skins, and bites that can cause severe itching, redness, blisters, or swelling in some individuals, while others remain asymptomatic. If bed bugs are suspected in luggage, it is recommended to unpack in a bathtub or shower to easily spot and contain any escaping insects, preventing them from hiding in furniture.

For confirmed infestations, pest control companies offer treatments using nitrogen or carbon dioxide. Alternatively, infested clothing may need to be discarded in sealed plastic bags. Less severe infestations can be tackled with cold or heat: items can be frozen at minus 18 degrees Celsius for at least three days in sealed bags, or washed at 60 degrees Celsius. Non-washable items can be tightly wrapped and heated to at least 55 degrees Celsius for an hour to kill both the bugs and their eggs.
