One of Türkiye’s Most Active Volcanoes: New Footage Shows a Crater Described as “Like a Pit of Hell”

Gas and steam rise from the crater of Mount Tendürek, one of Türkiye’s most active volcanoes, in footage shared by a nature enthusiast and a mountaineer.

Archaeologist Onur Benli and mountaineer Zayim Cemal Altay descended into the crater. Tendürek last became active in 1855, according to the report.

Benli said they measured temperatures of 84 degrees Celsius at some of the vents. He described the fumarole area as “like a pit of hell,” saying it was striking to see sulfurous gases seeping through the rocks and to smell them.
