One year later, Kwankwaso’s transformer still sits unused in Nasarawa community

The transformer meant to end Mai-Gizo’s electricity problems has spent a year lying on the ground, still waiting to be installed.

The equipment was donated to the community in Angwan Shamaki, in Nasarawa State’s Keffi Local Government Area, after former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso reportedly noticed that residents had no electricity. Community leader Idris Bello said Kwankwaso delivered it less than 24 hours after promising to help.

But the donation has not brought power to the community. Bello said residents have endured darkness for about three years, despite Mai-Gizo’s proximity to the Keffi NYSC camp. Wadada Aliyu, the Nasarawa State All Progressives Congress candidate, contributed ₦1 million toward installation, but Bello said that amount was insufficient to complete the work.

“Our community has been without light for the past three years. With Kwankwaso, we were hopeful, but up till now, we are still in darkness,” he said. Residents have hired security personnel to protect the transformer from theft or vandalism and are appealing to Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule to provide the remaining funds.
