Online Retail: Amazon invests over 300 million euros in Pforzheim

Amazon is set to significantly expand its Pforzheim, Germany, facility, investing more than 300 million euros and more than doubling its workforce to over 2,000 employees by the end of 2029. This expansion marks a strategic shift in the site's operational focus.

Previously, the Pforzheim location primarily stored medium-sized items such as diaper packs and game consoles. Following the expansion and modernization, it will specialize in handling small to medium-sized articles, ranging from USB sticks to irons. The upgraded facility will accommodate approximately 20 million items and incorporate hundreds of transport robots to assist employees by bringing mobile shelves to them, thereby reducing walking distances.

"We want to be a good neighbor in the region – with attractive jobs, prospects for employees, and commitment to local economic development," a spokesperson for Amazon stated. Currently, the site employs over 1,000 people, a number slated for substantial growth. During the renovation period, all existing jobs will be maintained.

Pforzheim's Mayor, Peter Boch, hailed the investment as a strong commitment to the city's economic standing. He noted that Pforzheim has attracted significant foreign direct investment in recent years, which has been physically realized at the location. Amazon operates ten sites in Baden-Württemberg, currently employing 3,000 people across the state.

The investment underscores Amazon's continued commitment to its German operations and its strategy of optimizing logistics networks to meet growing e-commerce demands. The Pforzheim expansion is expected to enhance delivery efficiency and create substantial employment opportunities in the region.
