Online Voting System Malfunctions on First Day of Democratic Party Convention

The Democratic Party of South Korea faced significant technical difficulties on the first day of its national convention's online voting period, as a system error prevented members in the Chungbuk region from casting their ballots. The online voting for the party leader and supreme council members commenced on August 28, but the party's election management committee reported that Chungbuk members could not access the voting system via the provided links.

The central election management committee confirmed that the issue was isolated to the Chungbuk region among the four major metropolitan areas in the central region. As of 10:07 AM, the error persisted, and its cause remained unconfirmed. The party is working with 'BizTalk,' the company responsible for sending out notification messages, and the online voting system management company to identify the problem.

This disruption comes as the party prepares for a series of regional preliminary elections. Voting for members in Chungnam, Chungbuk, Daejeon, and Sejong is scheduled for August 28-29, followed by ARS (automated response system) voting on August 30-31. The results for the central region are expected on September 1.

Subsequent voting rounds will cover Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (starting August 29), followed by Incheon and Jeju (August 8), Daegu, Gyeongbuk, and Gangwon (August 9), and finally Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk (August 15), with Seoul and Gyeonggi concluding the process on August 16. The final results will be announced on August 17. The election process combines 70% of votes from delegates and party members with 30% from public opinion surveys to determine the party leader and supreme council members. The total electorate comprises 1,544,888 individuals, including 17,627 delegates and 1,527,261 party members.
