Ontario Funds New Family Medical School as it Preps for 2028 Opening

Ontario is investing $55.8 million to establish a new medical school at York University, dedicated to training family doctors. The school is slated to open its doors to its first students in the fall of 2028, aiming to address a critical shortage of primary care physicians in the province. Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn stated that the funding will support faculty hiring, the development of a medical library, and the operation of both undergraduate and graduate programs. Initially, the program will offer 80 undergraduate spots and 102 postgraduate spots. These numbers are projected to grow significantly, with plans to eventually accommodate 240 undergraduate students and 293 postgraduate seats. York University's new medical school is set to be the first in Canada to primarily focus on training family doctors. This initiative comes as the Ontario Medical Association reports that over 2.5 million Ontarians currently lack a family doctor. The province is simultaneously bolstering its health teams, which include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and social workers, as part of its broader strategy to meet healthcare demands.
