Ooni of Ife, monarchs to meet Sunday Igboho on regional security

A significant meeting is set to take place today in Ijero Ekiti, Ekiti State, where traditional rulers from the South-West, led by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, will convene with Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho. The gathering aims to address critical security concerns within the region and foster strategies for maintaining peace and stability.

This crucial meeting to be graced by all monarchs from Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, and parts of Kwara State will be presided over by the Co-Chairman of National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who also doubles as the Permanent Chairman of Southern Nigerian Traditional Rulers Council.

The meeting, hosted by the Owa Ajero of Ijero Ekiti, Oba Adebayo Adewole, is expected to bring together monarchs from Oyo, Lagos, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti, Ogun, and parts of Kwara State. Oba Ogunwusi, who co-chairs the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, will preside over the discussions. A key agenda item will be the enhancement of security across Yorubaland, including strengthening synergy with local security initiatives such as Igboho's Iru Ekun Security Network.

This stakeholders’ meeting will dwell extensively on the measures aimed at ensuring effective security of the South-West and synergy with local security initiative such as Iru Ekun Security Network in order to protect Yorubaland, most especially rural communities against any breach.

According to a statement from Igboho’s media office, the stakeholders will delve into measures for ensuring effective regional security and protecting rural communities. The role of traditional rulers in grassroots security and crisis prevention will also be a focal point. The statement commended the support from various security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, DSS, Police, and other paramilitary bodies, for their efforts in reducing insecurity. It also acknowledged the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director-General of DSS for their contributions.

The meeting will also discuss extensively on the active involvement of traditional rulers in local security, bearing in mind their closeness to the grassroots and their critical roles in the prevention of crisis and management of disputes between Yoruba ethnic nationalities and other tribes in South-West communities.
