OPay unveils top 48 teams in National Innovation Challenge

OPay, a prominent fintech company in Nigeria, has advanced 48 student teams to the next stage of its National Innovation Challenge. This initiative is a key component of the expanded OPay Scholars Programme, which also includes a N1.2 billion scholarship fund and the OPay Futures career development platform. The program underscores OPay's dedication to fostering education, innovation, digital skills, and youth empowerment across Nigeria.

The National Innovation Challenge attracted over 2,200 team applications, involving more than 11,000 undergraduate students from tertiary institutions nationwide. Applications opened on May 25 and closed on July 3. Following a rigorous evaluation of originality, quality, relevance, and potential impact, 48 teams were selected. These teams comprise 24 from OPay's partner institutions and 24 from non-partner institutions, reflecting the program's commitment to inclusivity.

Each selected team consists of five students from the same tertiary institution. These teams will now participate in a six-week virtual learning and mentorship program. They will engage with industry experts from OPay, Google, and the Federal Government's 3MTT program through webinars designed to refine their ideas, deepen their understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship, and prepare them for subsequent competition stages.

Beyond the competition, the program offers a pathway to career opportunities through OPay Futures. Teams scoring 70 percent or higher in the webinar assessments will qualify for a three-month internship with OPay and other partner organizations. This internship aims to provide practical industry experience and prepare students for careers in Nigeria's digital economy.
