Opel Rekord C: 60 years of a legendary model

The Opel Rekord C, introduced in August 1966, celebrates 60 years as a legendary model that became a true bestseller for the German automaker. Designed from the ground up, it offered enhanced comfort, new technologies, and a diverse array of versions to meet various needs.

The Rekord C was available as a two-door and four-door sedan, in both basic and luxury trims, as well as a station wagon with three or five doors. Under the hood, it housed four- and six-cylinder CIH (camshaft-in-head) engines, ranging from 58 to 106 horsepower and with displacements from 1.5 to 2.2 liters. While the station wagon and van variants served practical family and daily needs, other versions highlighted the model's dynamic character.

In 1967, Opel unveiled the striking Rekord Coupé, featuring a fastback design that set it apart as a distinct sporty model with its own personality, not merely a sedan with a sloped roof. The same year also saw the introduction of the Rekord Sprint, distinguished by its sporty aesthetics, decorative stripes, additional headlights, and a 1.9-liter engine producing 106 hp, enabling a 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 12.5 seconds. The range was further completed by the four-seater Rekord Sport Cabriolet.

The Rekord C evolved into a remarkable success story. By the end of its production in December 1971, over 1.25 million units had rolled off the assembly line. This achievement made the Rekord C the first Opel model to surpass the one million sales milestone, setting a new record for the brand's mid-size models. It became synonymous with freedom, friendship, and memories for entire generations.

This special place in cultural memory is underscored by the band Die Toten Hosen, who featured the Rekord C Caravan in both their first album in 1983 and their 2026 studio album "Trink aus! Wir müssen gehen," creating a unique, lasting connection between the punk rock group and Opel.
