Opposition alerts to flooding in Venezuelan state amid heavy rains

Venezuelan opposition parties have raised alarms about severe flooding in the western state of Portuguesa, following intense rainfall. This new crisis unfolds as the nation grapples with the aftermath of powerful earthquakes that struck earlier in the week, causing widespread devastation and significant loss of life.

Vente Venezuela, a party led by Nobel Peace Prize laureate María Corina Machado, reported that the rains are causing "havoc" in Chabasquén, the capital of the Monseñor José Vicente de Unda municipality. According to the party, a river overflowed, affecting two schools and leading to widespread inundation. They expressed solidarity with the affected families, noting that the municipality is in a state of emergency with approximately 350 people displaced.

Voluntad Popular, led by Leopoldo López, also shared messages of support on social media, emphasizing Venezuelan resilience. "Just as we will overcome the ravages of the earthquake together, we will also overcome this new emergency. The solidarity and strength of Venezuelans will once again pave the way for us to rise," the party stated.

Primero Justicia also called for urgent attention to the "emergency situation" in the affected locality. The country is still reeling from the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes on Wednesday, which primarily impacted the coastal state of La Guaira. Those earthquakes resulted in at least 1,450 deaths, over 3,000 injuries, and left more than 12,000 families homeless.
