Opposition Leader Machado Will Not Participate in U.S.-Backed Dialogue Talks with Venezuela Government

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado declared on Sunday that she will not join dialogue talks between a faction of the opposition and the interim government, scheduled for August and supported by the United States.

Machado, a prominent critic of President Nicolás Maduro's administration, stated in a joint release with Edmundo González Urrutia, the opposition's presidential candidate in 2024, that her group was excluded from the process. "Members of the National Assembly of 2015 and representatives of the regime have announced the creation of a mechanism between both in whose design, construction and functioning, we do not participate; therefore, it is not our responsibility to explain its scope and decisions," the statement read.

This move signals a deepening rift within the Venezuelan opposition and raises questions about the effectiveness of U.S.-backed diplomatic efforts to resolve the country's political crisis. Machado, who was barred from running in the presidential election due to alleged administrative sanctions, has consistently advocated for a harder line against the Maduro government.

The dialogue mechanism aims to address various issues, including electoral conditions and sanctions relief. However, Machado's refusal to participate, along with that of other key opposition figures, suggests the talks may lack the broad representation needed for significant breakthroughs.
